Malathion is an organophosphate insecticide, an inhibitor of cholinesterase. In low doses (0.5%) malathion is used for treatment of pediculosis and scabies.
Status:
First approved in 1949

CHEMICAL (ACHIRAL)

Crotamiton is a scabicidal and antipruritic agent available as a cream or lotion for topical use. The drug was approved by FDA for the treatment of scabies and pruritic skin. Crotamiton is a mixture of the cis and trans isomers of N-ethyl-N-(o-methylphenyl)-2butenamide. Although the activity of crotamiton was shown both in vitro and in vivo, the mechanism of its action is still unknown.

Lindane is an isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane that has been used both as an agricultural insecticide and as a pharmaceutical. As a shampoo, lindane is used for treamtment lice infestation. Lindane lotion is used for treatment of scabies. Due to toxicities, associated with lindane, it is used only in patients who cannot tolerate or have failed first-line treatment with safer medication. Lindane exerts its parasiticidal action by being directly absorbed into the parasites and their ova, where it interferes with GABA neurotransmitter function by interacting with the GABAA channel complex at the picrotoxin binding site.
Status:
Possibly Marketed Outside US

Phosmet is a non-systemic, organophosphate insecticide used on both plants and animals. Phosmet is mainly used on apple trees for control of coddling moth, though it is used on a wide range of fruit crops, ornamentals and vines for the control of aphids, suckers, mites and fruit flies. Phosmet is a moderately potent cholinesterase inhibitor.
Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethrin derivative acts as a neurotoxin by depolarizing the nerve cell membrane. Permethrin disrupts the sodium channel current by which membrane repolarization is regulated resulting in fatal paralysis of the nerves in the exoskeletal respiratory muscles of susceptible arthropods, including lice and mite. Permethrin is sold under brand names NIx and Elimite to treat pediculosis, scabies and demodicidosis.
