It was found in bark of willow tree family and aspen Populus tremula. It is a well-known allergen in phenol-formaldehyde resins found to cause allergic contact dermatitis. Antioxidant activity of 2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol has been reported.

Propyl alcohol or n-Propanol, primary alcohol that is used as a solvent and chemical intermediate in the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries. It was found that n-Propanol exhibited low acute toxicity for animals via the dermal, inhalation, and oral routes of exposure. n-Propanol has no evidence of carcinogenicity or mutagenicity. This compound is not a reproductive toxicant at levels expected from using it as an inert ingredient in pesticide formulations.

It is used in the formulation of eye area makeup, skin care products, shampoos, perfumes, and colognes. Promising sources of natural 2-phenylethanol are microorganisms, especially yeasts, which can produce it by biosynthesis and biotransformation.
