Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (or 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)), a synthetic, psychoactive drug also known as ecstasy that was used as a recreational drug. This drug acts as both a stimulant and psychedelic and exerts its effects in the brain on neurons that use the chemicals serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine to communicate with other neurons. In spite of the presence of this compound in the List of control and forbidden compounds, it was studied in psychotherapy for patients with chronic, treatment-resistant posttraumatic stress disorder. Initial results showed efficacy for the treatment approach, although further studies are needed.

CHEMICAL (ABSOLUTE)

Cefcanel is a semisynthetic third-generation cephalosporin with antibacterial activity. Cefcanel is active against the species E. coli, K. aerogenes and Proteus mirabilis; H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis has reasonable susceptibility. Cefcanel inhibits 90% of S. aureus strains at 2 µg/ml, irrespective of the presence of a β-lactamase. Cefcanel binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. PBPs are enzymes involved in the terminal stages of assembling the bacterial cell wall and in reshaping the cell wall during growth and division. Inactivation of PBPs interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. This results in the weakening of the bacterial cell wall and causes cell lysis.

Deloxolone was devoid of aldosterone-like properties. Deloxolone could be of therapeutic value in peptic ulcer diseases without inducing fluid retention, hypertension and hypokaliemia. Carbenoxolone and deloxolone were orally administered to healthy volunteers in a cross-over double-blind trial. Both the concentration in gastric juice and the output of PGE2, determined by an RIA method in basal conditions and after pentagastrin bolus, increased in drug-treated compared to vehicle-treated subjects thus supporting the hypothesis that cytoprotection might be due to gastric PGE, levels. Moreover, deloxolone induced less marked effects than carbenoxolone on body weight, hematocrit, plasma potassium and proteins, confirming that deloxolone is less similar to aldosterone than the reference drug.
