Pentetrazol (pentylenetetrazole, BTD-001) is a pharmaceutical agent that displays activity as a central nervous system and respiratory stimulant. It is considered a non-competitive gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) antagonist. Pentetrazol (pentylenetetrazole) has been used experimentally to study seizure phenomenon and to identify pharmaceuticals that may control seizure susceptibility. GABA is thought to play a role in promoting sleep and its function is believed to be elevated in idiopathic hypersomnia. By blocking GABA’s function, pentetrazol (pentylenetetrazole, BTD-001) is expected to reduce excessive daytime sleepiness.

Melatonin (5-methoxy N-acetyltryptamine) is a hormone synthesized and released from the pineal gland at night, which acts on specific high affinity G-protein coupled receptors to regulate various aspects of physiology and behaviour, including circadian and seasonal responses, and some retinal, cardiovascular and immunological functions. Melatonin is also made synthetically and available without a prescription as an over-the-counter (OTC) dietary supplement in the U.S. Melatonin supplementation has many uses, however, it has been widely studied for treatment of jet lag and sleep disorders. Parents may consider using melatonin to help their child who has a trouble falling asleep. A medical professional should always evaluate insomnia or other sleeping disorders in children. Additionally, melatonin has been shown to protect against oxidative stress in various, highly divergent experimental systems. There are many reasons for its remarkable protective potential. In mammals, melatonin binds to a number of receptor subtypes including high-affinity (MT1 and MT2) and low-affinity (MT3, nuclear orphan receptors) binding sites, which are distributed throughout the central nervous system and periphery.

Smilagenin (also known as PYM50028 and Cogane) is a constituent of Jamaican sarsaparilla (Smilax ornata) and is a neuroprotectant that has been evaluated in Phase II clinical trials in Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. On 27 September 2011, the European Commission to Phytopharm plc, United Kingdom, granted orphan designation for smilagenin for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The details of the mechanism of action of smilagenin are incomplete but involve the upregulation of neurotrophic factors including Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

2′-Deoxycytidine (deoxyC) is one of the deoxy nucleosides, which after phosphorylation to dCTP is used to synthesize DNA via various DNA polymerases or reverse transcriptases. Deoxycytidine is phosphorylated by deoxycytidine kinase (dCK). This enzyme catalyzes the initial conversion of the nucleosides deoxyadenosine (dA), deoxyguanosine (dG), and deoxycytidine (dC) into their monophosphate forms, with subsequent phosphorylation to the triphosphate forms performed by additional enzymes.

Propagermanium, a newly introduced hydrophilic polymer of 3-oxygermanium propionic acid (3,3’-(1,3- dioxo-1,3-digermoxanediyl) bispropionic acid) has been reported to have antiinflammatory, antiviral and antineoplastic properties. In Japan propagermanium is approved for the treatment of HBe positive chronic hepatitis B. A postmarketing survey, however, revealed the occurrence of moderate to severe liver damage after the treatment in about 4% of patients. In most countries propagermanium falls under the regulations of dietary supplements. An import alert on germanium products was imposed by the U.S. FDA in 1988, because of possible injury to health. In Germany governmental institutions warned consumers of possibly fatal kidney damage.

Thymidine is a water-soluble pyrimidine deoxynucleoside and potent thymidine kinase substrate. Thymidine is known to be converted to dTTP and utilized for DNA synthesis. It is also known that thymidine is converted by catabolic enzymes to several end products. Excess thymidine results in high levels of dTTP, which exerts a regulatory feedback inhibition in the nucleotide biosynthesis pathways leading to DNA synthesis. This property of thymidine is used when it is given in high doses to patients with solid tumors. Thymidine is being tested in Phase II of clinical trials for the treatment of cancer and 5'-Nucleotidase Syndrome.

UBIQUINOL is a reduced form of coenzyme Q10, a lipid-soluble molecule that consists of an aromatic ring and a 10-unit isoprenoid chain. It is naturally produced by the body. A significant increase in plasma CoQ10 status observed after supplementation in one study suggested that UBIQUINOL is a better supplemental form to enhance the CoQ10 status than ubiquinone (the oxidized form of Q10). UBIQUINOL has also been found to reduce oxidative stress induced by strenuous exercise. Oxidative stress is associated with aging and many chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and cognitive decline. Ubiquinol has furthermore been shown to improve mitochondrial oxidative metabolism in the brain, and cognitive improvement was found as a result of Ubiquinol intake in chronic fatigue syndrome patients. UBIQUINOL is considered safe, but can have side effects such as upper abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea and headaches. CoQ10 might make blood-thinning drugs, such as warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), less effective. This could increase the risk of a blood clot.

Cytosine is a pyrimidine nucleobase, one of the five main bases of nucleic acids. In DNA and RNA cytosine is paired with guanine. Only small amounts of cytosine administered with food are incorporated in DNA. The majority of cytosine is synthesized de-novo starting from carbamoyl phosphate.
