Fructose, or fruit sugar, is a simple ketonic monosaccharide found in many plants, where it is often bonded to glucose to form the disaccharide sucrose. At a commercial scale, fructose is often derived from sugar cane, sugar beets, and maize. Fructose is one of the three dietary monosaccharides, along with glucose and galactose, that are absorbed directly into the bloodstream. A growing body of research suggests that diet high in fructose may be contributing to incidences of obesity, insulin resistance, and diabetes.

Physostigmine (Phy) is one of the oldest drug isolated from Calabar beans and successfully used for the treatment of glaucoma in 1864. Since then, it has been widely employed for various therapeutic purposes. Recently, it has gained prominence because of its clinical trials in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Physostigmine was used to treat glaucoma. It can be applied topically to the conjunctiva. Phy is also considered to be a potent prophylactic antidote for organophosphate poisoning. It is a reversible cholinesterase (ChE) inhibitor and has a short duration of action. For the last 50 years, numerous authors have shown that pretreatment with Phy would rapidly improve the incapacitating effects of organophosphate intoxication in various animal species. Phy carbamylates to a portion of ChE enzyme and thus protects the enzyme from binding with organophosphate, which are irreversible ChE inhibitors. The carbamylated ChE enzyme decarbamylates to free the enzyme for normal functioning. The rates of decarbamylation of butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) in plasma and ChE in brain and muscle are different and are related to the half-life of Phy in these tissues. In addition to ChE inhibition, Phy has a direct action on acetylcholine (ACh) receptor ionophore complex by interacting with the ACh-gated cation channels. A cholinesterase inhibitor that is rapidly absorbed through membranes. It also can cross the blood-brain barrier and is used when central nervous system effects are desired, as in the treatment of severe anticholinergic toxicity.

Perflenapent (EchoGen, Sonus Pharmaceuticals, Bothel, WA, USA) is a transpulmonary echocardiographic contrast agent for use in patients with suspected or established cardiovascular disease to provide opacification of cardiac chambers, enhance left ventricular border delineation with resulting improvement in wall motion visualisation. EchoGen comprises liquid droplets of dodecafluoropentane stabilised by polyfluoroalkyl(polyoxyethylene)
ethanol and dispersed in an aqueous formulation containing sucrose. Dodecafluoropentane is the chemical name used to reflect the perflenapent/perflisopent mixture. Following activation and administration of
EchoGen, dodecafluoropentane microbubbles are formed. EchoGen should only be used in patients where the study without contrast enhancement is inconclusive. The European Commission has approved SONUS Pharmaceuticals' EchoGen (perflenapent emulsion) in all 15 countries of the European Union. EchoGen is a fluorocarbon-based ultrasound contrast agent which has been approved as a transpulmonary echocardiographic contrast agent for use in patients with suspected or established cardiovascular disease who have had previous inconclusive non-contrast studies. Additional approved labeling in the EU states that the use of EchoGen in spectral and color Doppler studies was shown to enhance the visualization of blood flow across mitral, aortic and tricuspid valves in a subset of patients. In 2000 SONUS Pharmaceuticals withdrew the NDA for EchoGen in the USA.

Glutathione (GSH, also called as reduced glutathione) is a tripeptide with many roles in cells. It conjugates to drugs to make them more soluble for excretion, is a cofactor for some enzymes such as, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidases, peroxiredoxins. Glutathione S-transferases catalyse the conjugation of GSH via a sulfhydryl group to electrophilic centers on a wide variety of substrates in order to make the compounds more water-soluble. As a part of homeopathic product, glutathione is used for temporary relief of symptoms related to Free Radical Toxicity including tingling in hands and feet, mood changes, frequent colds, poor digestion, fatigue, and constipation. In addition, for temporary relief of pain in the back from urinating, constant urging and frequent urination, kidneys sensitive to pressure, and pain from back extending down the thigh. Glutathione is an important nutrient for brain function and loss of glutathione has been implicated in Parkinson's disease. In phase II of the clinical trial was investigated whether administration of either dose of glutathione, as a nasal spray, improves PD symptoms over time in a population of individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). In addition in phase II of clinical trial was shown, that reduced glutathione, an ingredient of RayGel™, has been helpful in decreasing some radiation therapy side effects to the skin. Reduced glutathione plays a vital role in both making DNA and cell repair. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common inherited disease among the Caucasian population with considerable morbidity and reduced life expectancy. Glutathione (GSH) represents the first-line defence of the lung against oxidative stress-induced cell injury. Therapeutic approaches with inhaled GSH could improve the reduced lung antioxidant capacity in order to counterbalance the oxidant stress linked to the chronic airway inflammation and bacterial infection.

Galactose, a monosaccharide sugar, is a key source of energy and is an important compound for early human development. Galactose is present in dairy products, the pectin of some fruits, vegetables, and some herbs. Children get most of their dietary galactose from milk. D-galactose is freely available in health food stores and is promoted for stimulating the immune system and improving gut motility in healthy individuals. Galactose as a part of food supplement participates in phase II of clinical trials for congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) patients. CDG is a group of more than 130 inborn errors of metabolism affecting N-linked, O-linked protein and lipid-linked glycosylation. In addition, monosaccharide is used in clinical trials phase I in patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), where the galactose lowers the level of a circulating factors that increase glomerular permeability to albumin in patients with resistant FSGS.

Phenolsulfonphthalein (Phenol red) is a pH indicator frequently used in cell biology laboratories. In medicine phenolsulfonphthalein is used as a test to help diagnose problems or disease of the kidneys. This test determines how well the kidneys are working. The test is based on the fact that phenol red is excreted almost entirely in the urine. Phenol red solution is administered intravenously, the urine produced is collected. By measuring the amount of phenol red excreted colorimetrically, kidney function can be determined. Phenolsulfonphthalein has being shown to be a mild estrogenic stimulus. Phenolsulfonphthalein as Phenol red thread test is used to diagnose dry eyes syndrome.

Iodine-124 (124I), a positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer, can be used in a variety of PET applications, such as protein and antibody iodinations, as well as in the design and synthesis of new PET tracers. I-124 has the potential to improve the current clinical practice in the diagnosis and treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). In addition, 124 PET/CT is a sensitive tool to detect some new lesions that are not visualized on the post-treatment I-131 scan. Recently published article has described that in order to I-124 used as a mainstream, this substance should be more commercially available and at a more chipper.

Iodocholesterol I-131 is a radioiodine-labeled cholesterol analog used as a diagnostic agent for Cushing's syndrome, hyperaldosteronism, and pheochromocytoma. Iodocholesterol I-131 accumulates in tissues where steroid hormones are produced, including the adrenal glands the ovaries and the testes. After binding to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors on adrenocortical cells, Iodocholesterol I-131 is internalized. As cholesterol is the precursor for all adrenocortical steroid hormones, areas of hormonal hypersecretion can be visualized using scintigraphy and the adrenocortical function can be assessed.
