IODOHIPPURIC ACID I-131 (ortho-Iodohippuric Acid I-131, [I-123]-OIH) is an iodine-containing compound used in pyelography as a radiopaque medium. Iodine-123 labelled ortho-Iodohippuric acid was used in the early 1970's as a kidney imaging agent or tracer that "lights-up" inside your body when scanned, but over the years its use has declined. [I-123]-OIH is primarily extracted by the renal tubules and has excellent pharmacokinetic properties, with a clearance only slightly less than that of p-aminohippuran, but its use has been compromised by the suboptimal imaging characteristics of the 364-keV photon of 131I and the delivery of relatively high radiation doses to kidneys and thyroid in patients with impaired renal function
Telotristat (telotristat etiprate) is an ethyl ester prodrug which is hydrolyzed to its active moiety LP-778902 both in vivo and in vitro. Telotristat etiprate is an orally bioavailable, small-molecule, tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) inhibitor. It is the first investigational drug in clinical studies to target TPH, an enzyme that triggers the excess serotonin production within metastatic neuroendocrine tumor (mNET) cells leading to carcinoid syndrome. Unlike existing treatments of carcinoid syndrome which reduce the release of serotonin outside tumor cells, telotristat etiprate reduces serotonin production within the tumor cells. By specifically inhibiting serotonin production telotristat may provide patients with more control over their disease. Telotristat etiprate has received Fast Track and Orphan Drug designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has been granted priority review by the FDA with a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) target action date of February 28, 2017.
Methenamine is an antibacterial agent for preventing recurrent urinary tract infection. It can be used as methenamine hippurate or methenamine mandelate preparations and is United States Food and Drug Administration-approved. Methenamine exerts its activity because it is hydrolyzed to formaldehyde in acid urine.

Iodohippuric acid I-125 (I-I25 Hippuran) is radioisotope that was used as a renogram probe in nefhrography in 1960s-1970s. It is an analog of I-131 labeled I(131) hippuran which has been recognized as the radiopharmaceutical standard for the measurement of effective renal plasma flow in subjects with renal failure but which use has been compromised by the suboptimal imaging characteristics of the 364-keV photon of 131I and the delivery of relatively high radiation doses to kidneys and thyroid in patients with impaired renal function. It was shown that radiation risk was rendered to a minimum with the use of the "cocktail" of 169U-EDTA and 125I-hippuran.

Hippuric Acid is an acyl glycine produced by the conjugation of benzoic acid and glycine, found as a normal component in urine as a metabolite of aromatic compounds from food. Increased urine hippuric acid content may have antibacterial effects. Hippuric Acid is used therapeutically in the form of its salts (hippurates of calcium and ammonium). It is an ingredient of FDA-approved drug Hiprex (methenamine hippurate tablets USP). Each yellow capsule-shaped tablet of Hiprex contains 1 g Methenamine Hippurate which is the Hippuric Acid Salt of Methenamine (hexamethylene tetramine). The tablet also contains inactive ingredients. Hiprex (methenamine hippurate tablets USP) has antibacterial activity because the methenamine component is hydrolyzed to formaldehyde in acid urine. Hippuric acid has some antibacterial activity and also acts to keep the urine acid. The drug is generally active against E. coli, enterococci and staphylococci. Enterobacter aerogenes is generally resistant. The urine must be kept sufficiently acid for urea-splitting organisms such as Proteus and Pseudomonas to be inhibited. Hiprex is indicated for prophylactic or suppressive treatment of frequently recurring urinary tract infections when long-term therapy is considered necessary.
