Daiichi Sankyo developed an inhibitor of acyl-coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferases (ACAT1 and ACAT2), pactimibe (also known as CS 505). Pactimibe has been used in trials phase II for reducing the progression of coronary artery disease and in patients with atherosclerosis. However, on October 26, 2005, the company made the decision to discontinue all ongoing clinical studies of pactimibe, because of the secondary endpoints that showed a lower effect of the drug on atherosclerosis than the standard of care alone and no beneficial effect on the frequency of cardiovascular events.

Ragaglitazar (DRF 2725, NNC 61-0029) is phenoxazine analog of phenyl propanoic acid having dual (PPARα and PPARγ) agonist property intended to restore insulin sensitivity and correct diabetic dyslipidemia. PPAR-α is highly expressed in liver and muscle and upon activation leads to decreases in plasma triglycerides and increases in HDL cholesterol levels. PPAR-γ activation leads to enhancement of glucose uptake in skeletal muscles and adipose tissue. Ragaglitazar provided the glycemic control that was comparable with that of pioglitazone and, compared with placebo, provided a significant improvement in the lipid profile.

Iodofiltic Acid I-123 is a single-photon branching free fatty acid radiopharmaceutical with potential application in single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Assessment of fatty acid metabolism by radionuclide techniques has a potential role for the early detection of myocardial ischaemia and the assessment of the severity of ischaemic heart disease. The Iodofiltic Acid I-123 scan is preferable because it can provide suitable information for risk stratification just after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) without requiring the patient to exercise; it can also detect previous ischaemic insult even after recovery of myocardial perfusion, the so- called "ischaemic memory".
