Saquinavir (brand names Invirase and Fortovase) is an antiretroviral drug used together with other medications to treat or prevent HIV/AIDS. Saquinavir is an inhibitor of HIV protease. HIV protease is an enzyme required for the proteolytic cleavage of viral polyprotein precursors into individual functional proteins found in infectious HIV. Saquinavir is a peptide-like substrate analog that binds to the protease active site and inhibits the activity of the enzyme. Saquinavir inhibition prevents cleavage of the viral polyproteins resulting in the formation of immature noninfectious virus particles. The most frequent adverse events with saquinavir in either formulation are mild gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea, nausea, loose stools & abdominal discomfort. Invirase is better tolerated than Fortovase.

Novobiocin (also known as streptonivicin) is an aminocoumarin antibiotic, active against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Novobiocin and other aminocoumarin antibiotics act as a potent competitive inhibitor of DNA gyrase B. The oral form of the drug was withdrawn from the market in 1999 due to safety or effectiveness reasons. Later it was discovered that novobiocin inhibited Hsp90 and topoisomerase II, and novobiocin was investigated in clinical trials against metastatic breast cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. Topical form of novobiocin was investigated in combination with nalidixic acid for treatment of psoriasis.

Neurotransmitters, thus retained in cytosol, are then neutralized by MAO.

Rutin, also called rutoside, is the glycoside flavonoid found in a certain fruits and vegetables. Most rutine-rich foods are capers, olives, buckwheat (whole grain flour), asparagus, raspberry.In a clinical trial, rutin was found to aid control of intraocular pressure in patients with primary open angle glaucoma. As a component of dietary supplement Phlogenzym, rutin is used for treatment of osteoarthritis. Rutin is also used for treatment of post-surgical swelling of the arm after breast cancer surgery. Traditionally, rutin is used to prevent mucositis due to cancer treatment, to treat blood vessel disease such as varicose veins, bleeding, hemorrhoids.

Hydrastinine is a synthetic alkaloid prepared by various processes from either hydrastine, berberine, or narcotine. It exerts a strong stimulating action on the uterus of all species studied, including human. Hydrastinine and the closely related alkaloid cotarnine have been employed as hemostatics, particularly in abnormal uterine conditions. In the non-pregnant animal, hydrastinine in doses of 10 mg. depressed both tonus and activity, even after the section of the hypogastric. In the pregnant cat, it caused the uterus to contract. A stimulant action was also noted in the non-pregnant animal if nicotine were administered prior to hydrastinine. The rabbit uterus in situ was strongly contracted. Laidlaw believed that hydrastinine acted on the uterus both directly on the smooth muscle and also through its sympathetic innervation. Repeated administration of large doses for a period of time resulted in greatly increased amplitude of contractions which persisted after removal of the drug. The drug was patented by Bayer as a haemostatic drug during the 1910s.

Resveratrol, a natural non-flavonoid polyphenol, exhibits a wide range of beneficial properties as an anticancer agent, a platelet anti-aggregation agent, and an antioxidant, as well as its anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antiallergenic. This compound is in phase III clinical trials in combination with carboxymethyl-β-glucan for improving nasal symptoms in children with pollen-induced allergic rhinitis. Also in phase III clinical trial in the treatment of painful knee osteoarthritis and in type 2 diabetic patients. It has been demonstrated that resveratrol may prevent type 2 diabetic by targeting Sirtuin type 1 (SIRT1), indicating that SIRT1 may be a novel therapeutic target for diabetes prevention.

Nitenpyram is a neonicotinoid, a neurotoxin that blocks neural messages and used in agriculture and veterinary medicine to kill external parasites of pets. Imidacloprid act as agonists at the insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). The botanical insecticide nicotine acts at the same target without the neonicotinoid level of effectiveness or safety. Fundamental differences between the nAChRs of insects and mammals confer remarkable selectivity for the neonicotinoids. Whereas ionized nicotine binds at an anionic subsite in the mammalian nAChR, the negatively tipped ("magic" nitro or cyano) neonicotinoids interact with a proposed unique subsite consisting of cationic amino acid residue(s) in the insect nAChR. Nitenpyram was introduced into the United States in 1994 as a veterinary flea control treatment, structural pest and crop insecticide, and seed treatment. It has been used orally in dogs, cats, and some wildlife species for over 10 years. After ingestion, it begins killing adult fleas within 30 minutes, and effects continue for up to 48 hours. Though nitenpyram is used to kill adult fleas quickly on an infected animal, it does not kill insect eggs and has no long-term activity. Thus, it is not effective as a long-term flea preventative; however, it can be repeatedly applied over the course of several days to eradicate a single instance of infestation. Nitenpyram can be combined with a longer-term flea preventative like fipronil or lufenuron to prevent reinfestation. Neonicotinoids for veterinary use are considered to have a low order of toxicity for domestic animals and there are no reports of nitenpyram intoxication.
