Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an 18-carbon omega-3 essential fatty acid, is the precursor of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA cannot be synthesized by humans and therefore must be entirely acquired from exogenous sources. Evidence for the essentiality of ALA was first provided by a study showing that ALA supplementation reversed the abnormal neurologic signs observed in a 6-year-old girl who suffered from sensory loss and visual complications. Most of the ALA is catabolized via beta-oxidation for energy generation, and a small proportion of it undergoes conversion to produce another two potent members of omega-3 PUFA family: EPA and DHA. Delta 6 desaturase (D6D) enzyme is responsible the conversion of ALA to DHA. Although not conclusive, it was suggested, that the benefits associated with ALA seem to stem mainly from EPA and DHA, and as major consequence of ALA deficiency it appears that EPA and DHA are not adequately produced.

Rhodamine B is a fluorescent dye whose quantum yield is strongly dependent on temperature in the range of 0°C to 100°C, making it ideal for liquid based systems. It is a cell-permeant fluorogenic dye most often used as a conjugate to antibodies and proteins for fluorescence detection in microscopy. Rhodamine B is widely used in industrial purposes, such as printing and dyeing in textile, paper, paints, leathers etc. Rhodamine B was tested for use as a biomarker in oral rabies vaccines for raccoons, to identify animals that have eaten a vaccine bait. It has also been used as an anterograde and retrograde tracer in neurons and in nanoparticles to detect apoptosis.
Isoflupredone is a veterinary drug used in cows, pigs and horses for the treatment of wide range of conditions: ketosis, musculoskeletal disorders, hypersensitivity, infections, inflammatory diseases, etc. The drug belongs to the class of corticosteroids and exerts its therapeutic effect by binding to glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors of animals.

Erythrosine B (also known as Red No. 3), a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved red food dye, is found in cosmetics and food. It is also used as a plasma stain for nerve cells and staining bacteria in soil. It was studied the modulating capabilities of erythrosine B on amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) aggregation and Aβ-associated impaired neuronal cell function. It is known, that aggregation Aβ is closely linked to the development of Alzheimer's disease pathology.

Velnacrine (9-amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroacridin-1-ol) is an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. It was studied for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease however development was discontinued. There has been no research into the use of velnacrine as a cognitive enhancer in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease since 1994. The FDA peripheral and CNS drug advisory board voted unanimously against recommending approval. This review shows the toxic nature of velnacrine, and provides no evidence of efficacy.

Benzoctamine (Tacitin), a psychotropic drug, known to exert in man an anti-anxiety effect. Its action also was studied when given as a hypnotic or sedative in patients with respiratory failure. Benzoctamine decreases 5-HT turnover in the brain and this action may play a role in the anti-anxiety effect of the drug.

Nepaprazole is a proton pump inhibitor of substituted 2-(2-pyridinylmethylsulfinyl)-1H-benzimidazole class evaluated as useful drug for the clinical treatment of peptic ulcer diseases. The effects of the TY-11345 (nepaprazole sodium salt) on gastric mucosal proton pump (H+/K(+)-ATPase) activity, gastric acid secretion and gastro-duodenal lesions were investigated in experimental animals. TY-11345 potently inhibited H+/K(+)-ATPase activity in isolated rabbit gastric mucosal microsomes and the inhibitory effect was enhanced under weak acid conditions. In Ghosh & Schild rats, intravenous injection of TY-11345 significantly inhibited gastric acid secretion stimulated by tetragastrin; the effect of TY-11345 was twice as potent as that of omeprazole. In pylorus ligated rats, TY-11345 inhibited basal gastric acid secretion by both the intraduodenal and oral routes with 9 and 5 times more greater potency than those of omeprazole, respectively. The antisecretory effect of TY-11345 persisted for more than 24 h in pylorus ligated rats. In experimental ulcer models, TY-11345 prevented the formation of water-immersion stress, ethanol or indomethacin-induced gastric lesions and mepirizole-induced duodenal lesions in rats. The antiulcer effects of TY-11345 were 3 to 15 times more potent than those of omeprazole. These results suggested that TY-11345 had potent antisecretory and antiulcer effects which are exerted by suppression of H+/K(+)-ATPase activity in gastric parietal cells. Nepaprazole sodium had been studied in phase II clinical trials for treatment of gastric ulser but this research has been discontinued.

Cimetropium bromide (cimetropium) is a semi-synthetic belladonna alkaliod, a quaternary derivatives of scopolamine. Cimetropium was used in Italy under the name Alginor for the treatment of painful gastrointestinal conditions, such as irritant bowel syndrome or infant colics as well as in preparation for diagnostic procedures. The drug exerts its action by binding to muscarinic receptors and inhibiting their activity.
