Acetarsone is a pentavalent arsenical compound with antiprotozoal and antihelmintic properties. It was first discovered in 1921 at Pasteur Institute by Ernest Fourneau, and sold under the brand name Stovarsol (fourneau is the French word for stove). Before stovarsol was used in the treatment of congenital syphilis, it had already been used in other diseases : amoebiasis, acquired syphilis, yaws, trypanosomiasis and malaria, and a formidable list of toxic manifestations can be compiled from the literature. Bender (I927) recorded six cases of poisoning with malaise, fever, cedema, jaundice, diarrhoea, albuminuria, bronchitis, coryza and skin troubles, such as diffuse erythema, dryness and pruritus. Of 232 cases of amoebiasis treated by Brown (I935) without a death, thirteen (5.6%) had toxic erythemata, some of them so severe as to amount to exfoliative dermatitis. Although its mechanism of action is not fully known, acetarsone may bind to protein-containing sulfhydryl groups located in the parasite, thereby forming lethal As-S bonds. This may prevent their functioning and eventually kill the parasite.

Umifenovir or arbidol (ethyl-6-bromo-4-[(dimethylamino)methyl]-5-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-[(phenylthio)methyl]-indole-3-carboxylate hydrochloride monohydrate) is a Russian-made potent broad-spectrum antiviral with demonstrated activity against a number of enveloped and non-enveloped viruses. For both viral infections the anti-viral mechanism involves umifenovir inhibition of virus-mediated fusion with target membrane and a resulting block of virus entry into target cells. Arbidol was shown to have effects on nonspecific defense factors, on its capacity to induce interferon and activate phagocytes in particular. Arbidol-treated patients with lower baseline immunity showed improvement in immunological parameters (in the counts of CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, in the levels of serum immunoglobulins). Arbidol produces a high preventive and therapeutical effects in influenza A and B and other acute respiratory viral infections, prevents postinfluenza complications, reduces the incidence of exacerbations of chronic diseases in postinfluenza patients. In influenza, the therapeutical efficiency of the drug appears as decreases in intoxication, the severity of catarrhal syndrome, shorter fever and disease in general. Arbidol is beneficial for patients with secondary immunodeficiency, in those with recurrent herpes infection or chronic bronchitis.
Calcium dobesilate (brand name Doxium) is a veno-tonic drug, which is widely prescribed in more than 60 countries from Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East for three main indications: chronic venous disease, diabetic retinopathy and the symptoms of haemorrhoidal attack. This drugs also in the phase III of clinical trial is an effective adjuvant therapy, with an absence of significant side-effects, in patients with venous ulcers and stasis dermatitis. It was suggested, that the inhibitory effect of calcium dobesilate on platelet function is mediated through the cyclic AMP pathway, and probably through activation of adenyl cyclase.

Amineptine is a selective inhibitor of dopamine reuptake. The drug was developed in France and was marketed for the treatment of depressive disorders under the name Survector among the others. Amineptine was withdrawn from the French market in 1999 because of abuse and drug dependence and because of its hepatic (cholestatic injuries) and cutaneous (acne) adverse effects.

Cyclobutyrol (CB) is a choleretic agent, which also inhibits biliary lipid secretion. Administration of cyclobutyrol reduced biliary concentration and output of cholesterol and phospholipid. This is due to an uncoupling of the secretion of cholesterol and phospholipids from that of bile acids. Biliary outputs of the canalicular membrane enzymes 5'-nucleotidase and alkaline phosphodiesterase I are depressed. The most likely effect of CB is exerted at the level of the canalicular membrane.

Hopantenic acid (homopantothenic acid) is a central nervous system depressant. Formulated as the calcium salt, it is used as a pharmaceutical drug in the Russian Federation under the brand name Pantogam. In Russia it is widely used to treat a variety of neurological, psychological and psychiatric conditions. The drug has been on the pharmaceutical market since 1979 and has been proven to be safe even for children from 3 years old upwards. Hopantenic acid is a natural forming substance, has some of the lowest side effects and considered to be very safe. Use Pantogam to treat a wide variety of cognitive and nervous system disorders with combined sedative and mild stimulant effect. Hopantenic acid is not approved for use in Europe or the United States. GABA receptor agonist.

Cloricromen a drug that inhibits platelet aggregation in man and in experimental thrombosis. Experiments on rodents have revealed that cloricromene which reduced tumor necrosis factor production, could be useful in the treatment of periodontitis. In addition, it could be potentially useful in ischemic-retinal diseases where amelioration of blood flow and inflammation is desirable. However, experiments with patients with cerebrovascular occlusive disease didn’t shown any effect of cloricromen on coagulative variables.
