6-amino-penicillanic acid is a common parent amine of various penicillins. 6-amino-penicillinic acid possesses definite antibacterial properties but these are much lower order than these of benzylpenicillin. It is destroyed by penicillinase (Beta-lactamase). The first penicillins to appear as derivatives of 6-APA were in fact phenethicillin and propicillin.

Ticarcillin (also known as Ticar) is a semisynthetic antibiotic with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Ticarcillin is not absorbed orally; therefore, it must be given intravenously or intramuscularly. Ticarcillin's antibiotic properties arise from its ability to prevent cross-linking of peptidoglycan during cell wall synthesis when the bacteria tries to divide, causing death. Usage of ticar was discontinued.

Dicloxacillin sodium USP is a semisynthetic antibiotic substance which resists destruction by the enzyme penicillinase (beta-lactamase). It is monosodium (2S,5R,6R)-6-[3-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-5-methyl-4- isoxazolecarboxamido]-3,3-dimethyl-7-oxo-4-thia-1-azabicyclo [3.2.0]heptane-2-carboxylate monohydrate. Like other β-lactam antibiotics, dicloxacillin acts by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It inhibits cross-linkage between the linear peptidoglycan polymer chains that make up a major component of the cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria. Dicloxacillin is administered orally via capsule form or powder for reconstitution.
