Calycanthine is the principal alkaloid of the family Calycanthaceae. Calycanthine is a central nervous system toxin, causing convulsions in animals. It is being used as a tool for studying the physiological roles and disorders of L-type channels, identification of L-type currents within the mix of channel subtypes and for increasing the contractility of smooth and cardiac muscle.
Catharanthine is a terpene indole alkaloid produced by the medicinal plant Catharanthus roseus. Catharanthine is derived from strictosidine, but the exact mechanism by which this happens is currently unknown. Catharanthine is one of the two precursors that form vinblastine, the other being vindoline.
The 17-ketosteroid epiandrosterone is a metabolite of testosterone precursor dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Epiandrosterone have been considered to be merely inactive end product of DHEA, but may in fact be physiological effectors in their own right. It is formed in peripheral tissues, from which it is released into the circulation and is ultimately excreted in the urine. Epiandrosterone is only a weak androgen, but it is widely recognized to inhibit the pentose phosphate pathway and to decrease intracellular NADPH levels. Epiandrosterone may act as a L-type Ca2+ channel antagonist. Epiandrosterone mainly transformed into 17beta-hydroxylated derivatives, 7- or 16alpha-hydroxylated metabolites under NAD(P)H conditions, and 5alpha-androstane-3,17-dione under NAD(P)+ conditions. Epiandrosterone is used as an anabolic agent (dietary supplement, a precursor to dihydrotestosterone) to increase strength, muscle hardness and also improves libido.

Alverine is a smooth muscle relaxant used for the treatment irritable bowel syndrome. Alverine may increase calcium influx during action potentials due to inhibition of the inactivation of L-type calcium channels, but may also suppress evoked activity by inhibiting the sensitivity of contractile proteins to calcium.
Nuciferine is an aporphine alkaloid extracted from lotus leaves, which is a raw material in Chinese medicinal herb for weight loss. Nuciferine was studied as an anti-tumor agent against human neuroblastoma and mouse colorectal cancer, through inhibiting the PI3K-AKT signaling pathways and IL-1 levels. In addition, was suggested, that nuciferine had atypical antipsychotic-like actions. Nuciferine was an antagonist at 5-HT2A, 5-HT2C, and 5-HT2B, an inverse agonist at 5-HT7, a partial agonist at D2, D5 and 5-HT6, an agonist at 5-HT1A and D4 receptors, and inhibited the dopamine transporter. In addition, was shown, that that nuciferine had a therapeutic effect on respiratory diseases associated with the aberrant contraction of airway smooth muscles and/or bronchospasm through the blockade of voltage-dependent L-type Ca2+ channels and/or nonselective cation channels.
