Dextramycin ((S, S)-p-Chloramphenicol) is an optical isomer of Chloramphenicol, a broad-spectrum antibiotic with historical veterinary use in all major food-producing animals. The drug is biosynthesized by the soil organism Streptomyces venezuelae and several other actinomycetes and is chemically synthesized for commercial use. Chloramphenicol occurs in the meta-configuration and in the para-configuration and it contains two chiral centers thus in total eight different isomeric configurations exist. All para-stereoisomers are biologically active and 0.5% solution of Dextramycin shows antimicrobial activity. Currently, Chloramphenicol has banned for use in all food-producing animals.

Betamipron (BP) is an amino acid derivative that has benzoyl and carboxyl groups in its structure, and it also has very low toxicity in mammals (LD50 in the rat, more than 3,000 mg/kg, i.v.). BP is a renal anionic transport inhibitor and decreases nephrotoxicity caused by high doses of carbapenems, anionic drugs, by inhibiting the drug accumulation in the renal cortex. BP significantly inhibited organic anion uptake by human organic anion transporter 1 (human-OAT1) and human-OAT3 in a dose-dependent manner. Panipenem-betamipron is marketed as Carbenin® (Sankyo Company, Tokyo, Japan).

8-Hydroxyquinoline is is a heterocyclic phenol, exhibiting antiseptic, disinfectant and pesticide properties. It is used to prevent and treat vaginal bacterial infections, but the efficacy was not proven in clinical trial. 8-Hydroxyquinoline is used in over-the-counter remedies for diaper rash and oral health care. Its use for veterinary treatment of bacterial an skin infections is not approved by FDA. 8-Hydroxyquinoline acts by inhibition of RNA synthesis and DNA replication by chelating the dissociable cations Mn2 and Mg2 .

Cefathiamidine is a beta-lactam antibiotic that exhibits a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against gram-positive bacteria. By binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, it inhibits the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins.

Fleroxacin is an anti-bacterial agent developed for the treatment of uncomplicated cystitis in women, uncomplicated gonococcal infections, bacterial enteritis, and traveler's diarrea, urinary tract infection, pyelonephritis, skin, soft tissue, bone and joint infections, and lower respiratory tract infections. Fleroxacin acts on bacterials by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Although the current status of the drug in Europe and in the USA is unknown, there is information about its approval and usage in China.

Bisdequalinium (also known as R-199, trade name Solvidont) is an antibacterial agent for endodontic use. Bisdequalinium was available in three dispensing forms: an irrigation solution, a working solution, and a medication paste. They contained 0.125 %, 0.5 %, and 0.48 % Bisdequalinium respectively. The low cytotoxicity and high antimicrobial effects, detergent, and lubricating and chelating properties, all claimed in the manufacturer's brochure, make this material an appropriate candidate for clinical endodontic use.

Lenapenem is an anti-bacterial agent that was tested in late 90's in phase II clinical trials against bacterial infections. Lenapenem was shown to be active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and exerted its therapeutic effect by inhibiting penicillin binding proteins. The development of the drug was terminated due to the safety reason.
