Proxifezone is a mixture of phenylbutazone and d-propoxyphene patented by Societe d'Etudes de Recherches et d'Applications Scientifiques et Medicales E.R.A.S.M.E. as an anti-inflammation pharmaceutical composition with potent analgesic activity. Anti-inflammatory effects of Proxifezone associated with Phenylbutazone, that acts as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). D-propoxyphene acts as an opioid analgesic, that provides strong pain relief.

Phenylbutazone is an anti-inflammatory drug, which binds to and inactivates cyclooxygenases and prostacyclin synthase through peroxide (H2O2) mediated deactivation. The reduced production of prostaglandin leads to reduced inflammation of the surrounding tissues. Phenylbutazone was marked under the brand name butazolidin for the treatment rheumatoid arthritis and gout, but then this usage was discontinued. In addition, phenylbutazone is used in UK for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis, but only in those cases, when other therapies are unsuitable.

Clofezone (Perclusone), an analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent, is a drug that was used to treat joint and muscular pain, mostly in rheumatic diseases. Clofezone is a compound preparation of phenylbutazone and clofexamide. Tolerance of Perclusone was very good, no side-effects were observed.

In 2012, two newly developed active pharmaceutical ingredients for horses and food producing animals were released on the German market for veterinary drug products. Those are the parenterally applicable first generation cephalosporin Cefalonium (Cepravin) and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug Suxibuzone (Danilon). Suxibuzone is a d drug for treatment of pain and inflammation associated with musculoskeletal conditions in the horse eg. osteoarthritic conditions, bursitis, laminitis and soft tissue inflammation. It is a prodrug of the phenylbutazone, which inactivates prostaglandin H synthase and prostacyclin synthase
