Artemotil (also known as beta-arteether) is an antimalarial artemisinin derivative, approved for the treatment of severe cases of P. falciparum malaria. The mixture of artemotil and alpha-arteether is used in patients with cerebral malaria. Most of the artemisinin compounds including artemotil are metabolized into dihydroartemisinin, which is responsible for antimalarial activity. These compounds contain stable endoperoxide bridge. The antimalarial activity of the drug thus is dependent on the cleavage of the endoperoxide by intraparasitic heme. The cleaved endoperoxide ultimately becomes a carbon centered free radical, which then functions as an alkylating agent, reacting with both heme and parasitic proteins (but not DNA). In P. falciparum, one of the principal alkylation target is the translationally controlled tumor protein (DHA-TCTP) homolog. Some intraparasitic TCTP is situated in the membrane surrounding the heme-rich food vacuole, where heme could catalyse the formation of drug-protein (DHA-TCTP) adduct and inhibit the parasite's growth.

Sulbenicillin (INN) is a penicillin antibiotic, product name: KEDACILLIN (SODIUM SULBENICILLIN) is effective against gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and anaerobic Bacteroides, and is also effective against gram-positive bacteria sensitive to Penicillin – G. It’s excreted into the urine and bile in high concentration. Therefore, urinary levels, well above those required to eradicate urinary pathogens, are achieved. It is indicated to treat urinary tract infections: pyelonephritis, pyelitis, pyonephrosis, cystitis and urethritis. Bile-duct infections: cholecystitis and cholangitis. Respiratory tract infections: acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, bronchopneumonia, pneumonia and pulmonary suppuration. Obstetrics and Gynecology: intrauterine infection, adnexitis, intrapelvic infection and Bartholinitis. Superfacial suppurative diseases: folliculitis, furuncle, carbuncle, abscess, panaris, phlegmon, tonsilitis, peritonsilitis, peritonsillar abscess, erysipelas, ophthalmia, blepharitis, corneal ulcer, dacryocystitis, stye, post-operative wound infection and traumatic and burn infections. Peritonitis. Septicemia and sub-acute bacterial endocarditis. Sulbenicillin caused elongation of the bacterial cells. At the early stage of elongation, no demonstrable changes of ultrastructure of the cell wall were observed. At the late stage, lysis of the peptidoglycan layer occurred and spheroplast was formed. However, most of the outer membrane of the cell wall remained intact. Sulbenicillin acts upon the peptidoglycan layer, but not on the outer membrane.

Azidocillin is a narrow-spectrum, semisynthetic penicillin derivative with antibacterial activity towards Grain-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms, including Haemophilus influenze, against which it is as effective as ampicillin. Azidocillin binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. Inactivation of PBPs interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. This interrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis and results in the weakening of the bacterial cell wall, eventually causing cell lysis. Azidocillin can be applied in the treatment of inflammation of upper airways, middle ear, sinuses, throat, larynx and palatine tonsils. The substance is excreted with urine in 50-70% in the unchan¬ged form. It binds to the blood plasma proteins in 84%, and its half-life period is 30 min. The side effects are similar as those of benzylpenicillin but occur less frequently.

Epicillin, a penicillin antibiotic, has never been approved in the USA, however, was studied for the treatment of childhood pneumonia, gonorrhea. Epicillin didn’t show any therapeutic advantages for parenteral treatment over ampicillin. By now, ampicillin remains the best-documented drug.

Niridazole is used (but not officially recommended) for the treatment of schistosomiasis, dracunculiasis and tungiasis. The mode of action of niridazole is not fully understood. The major action of niridazole seems to be on the glycogen metabolism of the helminths. The drug also case structural damage to the reproductive system of female schistosomes. Another possible mechanism of action of niridazole involves the inhibition of DNA synthesis in schistosomes. It is metabolized in the liver. The most serious side effects were those connected with the nervous area (convulsion, hallucination, etc.).

Gentamicin is an antibiotic of the aminoglycoside group, is derived by the growth of Micromonospora purpurea, an actinomycete. Gentamicin is a complex of three different closely related aminoglycoside sulfates, Gentamicins C1, C2, and C1a. Gentamicin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, but may cause ear and kidney damage. Gentamicin binds to the prokaryotic ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria. It is bactericidal in vitro against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Adverse reactions include adverse renal effects, neurotoxicity (dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, roaring in the ears, hearing loss, peripheral neuropathy or encephalopathy), respiratory depression, lethargy, confusion, depression, visual disturbances, etc.
