Indacaterol is an ultra-long-acting beta-adrenoceptor agonist developed by Novartis. It was approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) under the trade name Onbrez Breezhaler on November 30, 2009, and by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under the trade name Arcapta Neohaler, on July 1, 2011. It needs to be taken only once a day, unlike the related drugs formoterol and salmeterol. It is licensed only for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (long-term data in patients with asthma are thus far lacking). It is delivered as an aerosol formulation through a dry powder inhaler.
Doripenem is a synthetic carbapenem that has broad antibacterial potency against aerobic and anaerobic gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Doripenem is structurally related to beta-lactam antibiotics and shares the bactericidal mode of action of other β-lactam antibiotics by targeting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) to inhibit the biosynthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Doripenem is resistant to hydrolysis by most β-lactamases and is resistant to inactivation by renal dehydropeptidases. Doripenem has many similarities to the other carbapenems, as well as some important differences, such as greater potency against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was found to be similar to comparator agents. The most common adverse effects related to doripenem therapy were headache, nausea, diarrhea, rash, and phlebitis.
Cefditoren pivoxil is a semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration. It is a 3rd generation cephalosporin that is FDA approved for the treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community acquired pneumonia, infection of skin and/or subcutaneous tissue, and pharyngitis/tonsillitis. Cefditoren is a cephalosporin with antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens. The bactericidal activity of cefditoren results from the inhibition of cell wall synthesis via affinity for penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Common adverse reactions include diarrhea, nausea and candida vaginitis. Co-administration of a single dose of an antacid which contained both magnesium (800 mg) and aluminum (900 mg) hydroxides or co-administration of a single dose of intravenously administered famotidine (20 mg) reduced the oral absorption of a single 400 mg dose of cefditoren pivoxil administered following a meal. Co-administration of probenecid with cefditoren pivoxil resulted in an increase in the plasma exposure of cefditoren.

BETAXON™ is a trade name for levobetaxolol hydrochloride ophthalmic suspension 0.5%, which is indicated for lowering intraocular pressure in patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The brand name Betaxon is discontinued in USA, but generic versions may be available. Levobetaxolol is a cardioselective (beta-1¬ adrenergic) receptor-blocking agent that does not have significant membrane-stabilizing (local anesthetic) activity and is devoid of intrinsic sympathomimetic action. Animal studies suggest levobetaxolol (S-isomer) is the more active enantiomer of betaxolol (racemate).

Arbutamine was indicated to elicit acute cardiovascular responses in order to aid in diagnosing the presence or absence of coronary artery disease in patients who cannot exercise adequately. Arbutamine is a synthetic catecholamine with positive chronotropic and inotropic properties. The chronotropic (increase in heart rate [HR]) and inotropic (increase in force of contraction) effects of arbutamine serve to mimic exercise by increasing cardiac work (producing stress) and provoke myocardial ischemia in patients with compromised coronary arteries. In functional assays, arbutamine is more selective for beta-adrenergic receptors than for alpha-adrenergic receptors. The beta-agonist activity of arbutamine provides cardiac stress by increasing HR, cardiac contractility, and systolic blood pressure.
Ceftibuten is a 3rd generation cephalosporin that is FDA approved for the treatment of acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial otitis media, pharyngitis and tonsillitis. Ceftibuten exerts its bactericidal action by binding to essential target proteins of the bacterial cell wall. This binding leads to inhibition of cell-wall synthesis. Common adverse reactions include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and headache. The effect of increased gastric pH on the bioavailability of ceftibuten was evaluated in 18 healthy adult volunteers. Each volunteer was administered one 400-mg ceftibuten capsule. A single dose of liquid antacid did not affect the Cmax or AUC of ceftibuten; however, 150 mg of ranitidine q12h for 3 days increased the ceftibuten Cmax by 23% and ceftibuten AUC by 16%.

Loracarbef (KT3777) is carbacephem antibiotic structurally identical to cefaclor, except that the sulfur atom of position 1 of the cephem nucleus has been replaced by carbon. It showed good affinity for penicillin-binding proteins. At low concentrations (< 2 mg/L) in vitro, it inhibits Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, beta-haemolytic streptococci groups B, C and G. Proteus mirabilis and Moraxella catarrhalis, including beta-lactamase-producing strains. At therapeutic plasma concentrations it is also active in vitro against most strains of Staphylococcus aureus, S. saprophyticus, Escherichia coli and beta-lactamase-positive and -negative strains of Haemophilus influenzae. Loracarbef has been indicated in the treatment of patients with mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms.
Cefmetazole is a semisynthetic cephamycin antibiotic. It has a broad spectrum of activity comparable to that of the second-generation cephalosporins, covering gram-positive, gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria. Its bactericidal action results from inhibition of cell wall synthesis. It effectively treats abdominal and respiratory tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections and used for surgical prophylaxis, reducing or eliminating signs and symptoms of infection. Cefmetazole has a low frequency of adverse effects, and a side effect profile similar to that of other cephamycins. Adverse effects following overdosage have included nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and convulsions.

Metipranolol is a beta-adrenergic antagonist effective for both beta-1 and beta-2 receptors. It is used as an antiarrhythmic, antihypertensive, and antiglaucoma agent. Metipranolol blocks beta1 and beta2 (non-selective) adrenergic receptors. It does not have significant intrinsic sympathomimetic activity, and has only weak local anesthetic (membrane-stabilizing) and myocardial depressant activity. Orally administered beta-adrenergic blocking agents reduce cardiac output in both healthy subjects and patients with heart disease. In patients with severe impairment of myocardial function, beta-adrenergic receptor antagonists may inhibit the sympathetic stimulatory effect necessary to maintain adequate cardiac output. Metipranolol when applied topically in the eye, has the action of reducing elevated as well as normal intraocular pressure (IOP), whether or not accompanied by glaucoma. Elevated intraocular pressure is a major risk factor in the pathogenesis of glaucomatous visual field loss. The higher the level of intraocular pressure, the greater the likelihood of glaucomatous visual field loss and optic nerve damage. The primary mechanism of the ocular hypotensive action of Metipranolol is most likely due to reduction in aqueous humor production. A slight increase in outflow may be an additional mechanism. Metipranolol reduces IOP with little or no effect on pupil size or accommodation. Metipranolol is known as the brand OptiPranolol. Brand-name OptiPranolol is manufactured by Bausch & Lomb Incorporated. However, the patents for OptiPranolol have expired, and this medication is currently available in generic form. Generic OptiPranolol eye drops are available in one strength -- metipranolol 0.3 percent solution. It is made by Falcon Pharmaceuticals.
