Octacosanol, a low–molecular-weight primary aliphatic alcohol, is the main component of a natural product wax extracted from plants. Most studies have used a wheat-germ oil extract, or policosanol, a natural mixture of primary alcohols isolated from sugar cane wax, of which octacosanol is the main component (approximately 67% of policosanol is octacosanol). It has a number of indications for its use, many of which are currently being researched. Moreover, a small controlled study showed that some patients with mild Parkinsonism claimed of benefit from octacosanol. Although some research has been conducted using policosanol, little research is currently available that focuses on octacosanol alone. Studies have also found that octacosanol may inhibit the production of cholesterol. In the early 1990s, researchers at Dalmer Laboratories in La Habana Cuba isolated and produced the first policosanol (PC) supplement. The original PC supplement has been approved as a cholesterol-lowering drug in over 25 countries throughout the Caribbean and South America. Cuban studies claim that 1 to 20 mg/day of the original PC supplement are effective at producing significant reductions in total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). These studies also show that PC supplements are potent antioxidants, promote proper arterial endothelial cell function, inhibit platelet aggregation and thrombosis, and serve as effective treatments for intermittent claudication. However, for the most part, those studies reporting therapeutic efficacy of PC were carried out by one research group situated in Cuba. Conversely, research groups outside of Cuba have failed to validate the cholesterol-lowering and antioxidant efficacy of PC. Cuban researchers, however, continue to claim that the efficacy is attributed to the unique purity and composition of the original PC preparation, a mixture not found in PC products used by external research groups. The absence of independent and external studies confirming the therapeutic benefits of PC in disease prevention and treatment raises questions regarding their true efficacy. Octacosanol also may prevent from atherosclerosis through activation of the PI3K/Akt and MAPK/Erk1/2 signaling pathways.

Conditions:

Ractopamine is a feed additive to promote leanness in animals raised for their meat. Pharmacologically, it is a TAAR1 agonist and β adrenoreceptor agonist that stimulates β1 and β2 adrenergic receptors. Ractopamine is known to increase the rate of weight gain, improve feed efficiency, and increase carcass leanness in finishing swine. Its use in finishing swine yields about three kilograms of additional lean pork and improves feed efficiency by 10%. Ractopamine is the active ingredient in products known as Paylean for swine and Optaflexx for cattle, developed by Elanco Animal Health, a division of Eli Lilly and Company, for use in food animals for growth promotion. Ractopamine use has been banned in most countries, including the European Union, mainland China and Russia while 27 other countries, such as Japan, the United States, Canada, and South Korea, have deemed meat from livestock fed ractopamine safe for human consumption. Ractopamine is safe for finishing pigs heavier than 240 lb (110 kg) when administered in the diet at concentrations up to 10 ppm and fed for up to 35 days.

Hydroxytyrosol is an important phenolic compound obtained from olive oil. Hydroxytyrosol possesses anti-inflammatory properties and has the capacity to inhibit cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes. Hydroxytyrosol is a powerful antioxidant due to its protective function in cells. Hydroxytyrosol protects the cardiovascular system, avoiding oxidation of LDL cholesterol, maintaining normal blood HDL cholesterol concentrations and thus preventing atherosclerosis. Hydroxytyrosol protects brain cells from lipid peroxidation because it easy penetrates through the blood-brain barrier. Thus, the compound can be used in the disease treatment of Alzheimer or Parkinson. In addition, the compound also helps to prevent osteoporosis because its consumption has positive effects on the formation and growth of bones. Hydroxytyrosol is under investigation phase II clinical trials for breast cancer women to evaluate its effect on mammographic density. The recently published article has shown hydroxytyrosol could prevent obesity and insulin resistance by altering the composition of the intestinal microbiota and improving the integrity of the intestinal wall.

Propyl alcohol or n-Propanol, primary alcohol that is used as a solvent and chemical intermediate in the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries. It was found that n-Propanol exhibited low acute toxicity for animals via the dermal, inhalation, and oral routes of exposure. n-Propanol has no evidence of carcinogenicity or mutagenicity. This compound is not a reproductive toxicant at levels expected from using it as an inert ingredient in pesticide formulations.
