Glyoxal refers to the reactive electrophilic species (RES) and is formed during different processes, e.g., lipid peroxidation, DNA oxidation. RES cause the damage of proteins and nucleotides and thus can cause different diseases in human, e.g., diabetes. Glyoxal reacting with free guanines in RNAs can be is used for chemical probing of RNA structure.

Diethyltoluamide (DEET) is an insect repellent used to keep insects away. This product is effective against mosquitoes, biting flies (gnats, sandflies, deer flies, stable flies, black flies), ticks, harvest mites, and fleas. DEET is absorbed through the skin. DEET has few adverse effects when applied as directed. The most common problem is local skin irritation, including erythema and pruritis, at the site of application.

Caprylic alcohol (also known as 1-octanol) is long-chain alcohol used to prevent foaming. The Caprylic alcohol has been demonstrated to effectively alleviate tremor symptoms in ET without causing intoxication or other clinically relevant adverse effects. Pharmacokinetic findings suggested that the effect of 1-octanol might be mediated through its metabolite octanoic acid.

Bornyl acetate is the main volatile constituent in numerous conifer oils and some Chinese traditional herbs, which has displayed an anti-inflammatory effect. In addition was shown, that this compound had therapeutic potentials for the osteoarthritis and may be developed as a preventive agent for lung inflammatory diseases. In combination with 5-fluorouracil, bornyl acetate possesses the anticancer activity by inducing apoptosis, DNA fragmentation as well as G2/M cell cycle arrest.

Conditions:
Diethylene glycol monomethyl ether is a ether-alcohol derivative. The ether being relatively unreactive. Flammable and/or toxic gases are generated by the combination of alcohols with alkali metals, nitrides, and strong reducing agents. They react with oxoacids and carboxylic acids to form esters plus water. Oxidizing agents convert alcohols to aldehydes or ketones. Alcohols exhibit both weak acid and weak base behavior. They may initiate the polymerization of isocyanates and epoxides. Diethylene glycol monomethyl ether (DEGME) is sold by Dow
under the tradename Methyl CARBITOL™ solvent. DEGME is an ethylene-series or E-series
glycol ether. It is primarily used as a de-icing additive for aviation fuel.
