Nandrolone undecanoate (brand names Dynabolon) is an anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS), which had been used for the treatment of the anemia of chronic renal failure for more than 25 years. Due to concerns over adverse effects, their use historically has been limited to nandrolone decanoate given to men, usually over age 50, who have intact kidneys. It binds to the androgen receptor to a greater degree than testosterone, but due to its inability to act on the muscle in ways unmediated by the receptor, has a less overall effect on muscle growth. Despite the fact that AAS are banned substances by professional sports organizations and illegal drugs by the DEA, they are used and abused extensively, especially by teenagers and young athletes or non-athletes either for cosmetic or recreational purposes. Users may even take from 10 to 100 times higher doses than the physiological one.

Adrenosterone (androst-4-ene-3,11,17-trione, 11-oxoandrostenedione) is an endogenous steroid hormone that has been promoted as a dietary supplement capable of reducing body fat and increasing muscle mass. Adrenosterone has shown to be converted into 11-ketotestosterone in humans, which contributes to adrenosterone's androgenic effects. It is proposed that adrenosterone may function as an inhibitor of the 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 enzyme (11beta-HSD1), which is primarily responsible for reactivation of cortisol from cortisone.

Boldione, also known as androstadienedione or 1-dehydroandrostenedione, as well as 1,4-androstadiene-3,17-dione, is an important industrial precursor for various steroid hormones. Boldione is a direct precursor (prohormone) to the anabolic steroid boldenone (1,4-androstadiene-17beta-ol-3-one). It is advertised as a highly anabolic/androgenic compound promoting muscularity, enhancing strength and overall physical performance, and is available on the Internet and in health stores. Boldione was marketed as a prohormone “dietary supplement” for many years in the mid-2000’s, but it is truly a potent precursor (ie. converts in the body) to the anabolic steroid Boldenone. In 2005 the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2005 classified boldenone as a Schedule III controlled illegal steroid.
