Crilvastatin is an inhibitor of hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase. In a rat model, the drug was demonstrated to increase low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol uptake by the liver more than high-density lipoprotein uptake, thus increasing the clearance of excess plasma cholesterol.
