Delmopinol, a surface-active cationic agent. It was approved by FDA under the name Decapinol for the treatment of gingivitis and prevention of periodontitis. The drug interacts with the early acquired pellicle, the thin layer of saliva polymers and proteins covering teeth and gums, and forms a barrier over teeth and gums. This barrier prevents the microbial adhesion and colonisation on the tooth and gum surface. Delmopinol itself has no bactericidal activity.

Sample Use Guides

Mouthwash formulation: Rinse 10ml of delmopinol (Decapinol mouthwash) for 30 sec and expectorate, use twice a day, avoid eating and drinking for about 30 minutes after the use of the mouthwash. Toothpaste formulation: Brush your teeth with delmopinol (decapinol toothpaste) as instructed by your dental professional.
Route of Administration: Dental
Bacteria isolated from samples of human dental plaque were treated with delmopinol mouthwash. Different dilutions of the delmopinol (100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.12%, 1.56%, 0.78%, 0.39%, 0.19%) were tested to determine the MIC of bacterial growth. MIC values were 0.78% for Streptococcus mutants, 1.56% for Lactobacillus and 6.25 and 3.12 for aerobic and anaerobic bacterias, respectively.
