Diethyl ether (ether) had been widely used for anesthesia until the 1960s despite its explosive properties and toxicity to both humans and animals. Diethyl ether still serves a role today as an effective inhalation agent. Newer inhalation agents have replaced ether completely and open drop delivery systems have been exchanged for complicated vaporizers and monitoring systems. Anesthesia in the developing world, however, still closely resembles primitive anesthetics.

Ethyl Methoxycinnamate (EPMC , Ethyl-p-methoxycinnamate) is a major constituent of Kaempferia galanga. with nematicidal, mosquito repellent, anti-neoplastic and anti-microbial activity. In preclinical studies Ethyl Methoxycinnamate shows marked larvicidal, antifungal and anti-inflammatory activities as well as inhibitory activity on susceptible and multi-drug resistant (MDR) clinical M. tuberculosis strains isolated from tuberculosis patients as well. In an in vitro anti-inflammatory mechanistic study, Ethyl Methoxycinnamate was found to inhibit both COX-1 and COX-2.

Cinidon-ethyl (BAS 615H) is a herbicide of isoindoldione class which selectively controls a wide spectrum of broadleaf weeds in cereals. Cinidon‐ethyl strongly inhibited protoporphyrinogen oxidase (Protox) activity in vitro, with I50 values of approximately 1 nM for the enzyme isolated from the weed species and from wheat. Cinidon-ethyl was approved in the EU in the early 2010s, but authorization was revoked due to lack of interest from the applicant.
