Biochemical studies demonstrate that penciclovir triphosphate inhibits HSV polymerase competitively with deoxyguanosine triphosphate. Consequently, herpes viral DNA synthesis and, therefore, replication are selectively inhibited. Famciclovir (FAMVIR®) is a prodrug form of penciclovir with improved oral bioavailability.
