Songorine is a diterpenoid alkaloid which can be isolated from the genus Aconitum. Songorin has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiolytic and the ability to promote wound healing. The Anti-anxiolytic properties appear to be linked to the agonistic activity of the Dopamine D2 receptor as shown in rat hippocampal slices. The wound healing effect is the result of songorine's ability to stimulate the development of mesenchymal progenitor cells, although the exact mechanism of action remains unclear.

1-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine is an effective blocker of striatal dopaminergic receptors in rat brain and is apparently the simplest chemical structure known to exert dopaminergic blocking activity. It is exhibited pronounced antihypertensive and weak sympatholytic activities in experimental animals. Blood pressure was also lowered in hypertensive patients and this effect was sometimes accompanied by a strong sedation, and after large repeated doses, by disorientation and stupor. In a filter paper bioassay 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine demonstrated acaricidal activity. 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine is a building block of many serotonergic and dopaminergic agents. Some of them have antidepressant activity.

Betonicine (trans-2-carboxy-4-hydroxy-1,1,-dimethylpyrrolidinium hydroxide, inner salt) and its cis isomer, turicine, are naturally occurring substituted pyrrolidines. Betonicine was used as an analgesic 1000 years ago and is still available commercially from herbalists today. Betonicine has been isolated from Achillea millefolium L. (Compositae) and probably from A. atrata L. (Compositae); it is an alkaloid. Proline betaine and Betonicine were identified as metabolically inert cell protectants against extremes in osmolarity and growth temperatures.

Arabinitol is the five-carbon sugar alcohol D-arabinitol (DA). It is a metabolite of the pathogenic Candida species, in vitro as well as in vivo, and can be determined by gas chromatography or enzymatic analysis. Endogenous DA and L-arabinitol (LA) are present in human body fluids. Serum DA and LA increase in renal dysfunction. In prospective clinical studies, elevated DA/LA or DA/creatine ratios in serum or urine have been found in immunocompromised, usually neutropenic, patients with invasive candidiasis. In addition, positive DA results have been obtained several days to weeks before positive blood cultures, and the normalization of DA levels has been correlated with therapeutic response in both humans and animals. Thus, arabinitol has been suggested a marker for invasive candidiasis. A non-invasive, non-culture-based method of determining urinary D-/L-arabinitol (D-/L-ARA) ratios was investigated as a tool for the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis in nosocomial paediatric infection cases in the clinical trial.

Polygodial is a sesquiterpene dialdehyde isolated from the leaves of certain peppers and related plants, that exhibits anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antinociceptive, anticancer, antifungal and antimicrobial activities. Polygodial’s primary antifungal action is as a nonionic surfactant, disrupting the lipid-protein interface of integral proteins nonspecifically, denaturing their functional conformation. It is also likely that Polygodial permeates by passive diffusion across the plasma membrane, and once inside the cells may react with a variety of intracellular compounds. Polygodial is a component of the “hot taste” in peppery spices of traditional Japanese cuisine.

SDZ-WAG-994 is a potent and selective A1 receptor agonist, discovered by Sandoz. SDZ-WAG-994 was able to induce a dose-related and sustained fall in blood pressure and heart rate in spontaneously hypertensive rats. The compound was investigated in patients with heart failure symptoms and moderate left ventricular systolic dysfunction, where it produced no effect. In patients with patients with permanent atrial fibrillation, SDZ-WAG-994 was able to limit the increase in mean heart rate during exercise. The compound was also tested for treatment of postoperative dental pain, but for all efficacy measures, SDZ-WAG-994 was not significantly different from placebo.

C-curarine-III chloride (Methvin) is a short-acting selective sympathetic ganglioblocker with weak antagonist activity on the nicotinic receptor at the neuromuscular junction; hypotensive. In test animals the drug produces a well-marked and short-term (easily controllable) hypotensive effect, without causing any histamine-like and direct vasodilation action. When used in relatively high doses methvin blocks the neuro-muscular conduction, potentiates the action of major muscle relaxants. A study of methvin in clinical conditions confirmed its high gangliolytic activity previously revealed in experiments.
