GHRP-1 is a growth hormone releasing peptide. GHRPs are synthetic, non-natural peptides that stimulate secretion of endogenous growth hormone. Like other GHRPs, the synthetic met-enkephalin analogue GHRP-1 includes unnatural D-amino acids, and was designed for its ability to stimulate growth hormone release, and may serve as performance enhancing drug. GHRP-1 is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, and can be detected using urine tests. The compound is thought to be a weaker stimulant of GH secretion than growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH). In an in vivo study in sheep it was shown that GHRP-1 and GHRH behave differently. Animals that exhibited a stronger reaction to GHRP-1, showed a weaker reaction to GHRH and vice-versa. This possibly reflects differences in intracellular mechanisms at the pituitary level.
