Neocinchophen is an analgesic and uricosuric. Cinchophen and neocinchophen (introduced by Chemische Fabrik auf Aktien as Atophan and Novatophan) were being advertised as superior substitutes for salicylates in the treatment of rheumatic fever. Chemically, cinchophen is phenylcinchoninic acid, and neocinchophen is the ethyl ester of its methyl derivative.

Rheumatic fever: Neocinchophen was administered in tablet form, 1 g of the drug being used every hour until definite symptoms of drug action were manifested. The three patients with rheumatic fever that were treated with neocinchophen obtained complete relief from subjective and objective symptoms of the disease after doses of 11, 14 and 16 g. One patient received with impunity 15 g additional to the 11 g, which gave him complete relief.
