Quinacrine was initially developed as an anti-malarial drug marketed under the name Atabrine. Also it was approved for the teratment of ascites, however it was wothdrawn for both indication in 1995 and 2003, respectively. The drug is also used for the treatment of giardiasis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, refractory pulmonary effusion and pneumothorax, induce female sterilization etc. Proposed mechanisms of action include DNA intercalation interference with RNA transcription and translation, inhibition of succinate oxidation interference with electron transport, inhibition of cholinesterase, and inhibitor of phospholipase.

Pyronaridine was developed in China and has been registered in that country since the 1980s. Outside China, none of the existing formulations is registered because of the failure to meet international regulatory standards. Pyronaridine is generally active against chloroquine-resistant parasites. Pyronaridine has been investigated for the treatment of Malaria. Pyronaridine targets hematin. Combination of pyronaridine with artesunate was indicated for the blood-stage treatment of both strains of malaria: P. falciparum and P. vivax. WHO currently recommends artesunate-pyronaridine in areas where other artemisinin-based combination therapies are failing.

Tilorone (trade names Amixin, Lavomax and others) is the first recognized synthetic, small molecular weight compound that is an orally active interferon inducer. Tilorone induces the formation of interferons (alpha, beta, gamma) by intestinal epithelial cells, hepatocytes, T-lymphocytes, and granulocytes. After ingestion, the maximum production of interferon is determined in the sequence of the intestine - liver - blood after 4-24 hours. Activates the stem cells of the bone marrow, stimulates humoral immunity, increases the production of IgM, IgA, IgG, affects the antibody formation, reduces the degree of immunosuppression, restores the ratio of T-helperers / T-suppressors. The mechanism of antiviral action is associated with the inhibition of translation of virus-specific proteins in infected cells, thereby suppressing the replication of the virus. Effective against influenza viruses and viruses that cause ARVI, hepato- and herpesviruses, incl. CMV and others.
