Calcium-potassium salt of (-)-Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is a principal constituent (10%–30%) of the dried fruit rind of Garcinia Cambogia, a plant native to Southeastern Asia. The dried fruit rind has been commonly used for centuries in Southeast Asia as a preservative, flavoring agent, and condiment to make meals more “filling.” Structurally HCA is very similar to citric acid. HCA has been shown to inhibit ATP-citrate lyase, blocking the conversion of citrate to acetyl-CoA, the first step in fatty acid synthesis. Subsequent studies have shown that HCA is effective at decreasing appetite by increasing serotonin levels in human and animal studies inhibiting fat synthesis and reducing body weight. Because of its weight reduction effects in animals and human studies, G. cambogia extracts containing salts of HCA are commonly marketed as dietary supplements for weight management. Typically, dietary supplements containing HCA consist of various salts, including HCA-sodium, -calcium, -potassium, -magnesium, or combinations thereof. Depending upon the salt(s) used and the novelty of the extraction process, the solubility, bioavailability, bioefficacy, and lactone content can vary considerably. Solubility, for example, can vary from 50% to 100%, while lactone content can range from 0% to 70%. HCA-SX (commercially known as Super CitriMax), is a popular dietary supplement derived from G. cambogia fruit and consists of 95% calcium/potassium HCA providing 60% hydroxycitric acid and is self-affirmed GRAS.
