Description

p-Menthane-3,8-diol is a biochemical pesticide derived from eucalyptus plants. This active ingredient is used to make products that are applied to human skin and clothing for the purpose of repelling insects, such as mosquitoes. It can be used in two types of consumer pesticide products: a spray and a lotion. When used according to the label, p-Menthane-3,8-diol products are not expected to cause harm to humans or the environment. p-Menthane-3,8-diol is used on humans and their clothing to repel insects. Studies have shown that p-Menthane-3,8-diol gives protection against the biting midge, Culicoides variipennis Coquillett, the deer tick, Ixodes ricinis L., and the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans L. P-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD) has being studied as an antiviral agent.

Sample Use Guides

In Vivo Use Guide
Products containing p-Menthane-3,8-diol can be in the form of liquids that are sprayed on skin or clothing, or lotions that are rubbed on skin.
Route of Administration: Topical
In Vitro Use Guide
The toxicity of PMD (p-Menthane-3,8-diol) at the following concentrations in cell maintenance media was determined on a cell line with MDCK cells: • 2.5mg/ml (0.25% w/v) • 5mg/ml (0.5% w/v) • 20mg/ml (2% w/v). The results showed that using an influenza virus A/Sydney/5/97 on MDCK cells, there was no viral replication as evidenced by cell survival with 2% w/v PMD in the culture medium.
