DL-Cysteine is a NMDA agonist at quisqualate receptors at high concentration. It is a reactive oxygen species scavenger. Acute administration of dl-cysteine completely abrogated the effects of iron loading on thrombus formation in mice. DL-Cysteine has been shown to reduce the recurrence rate of duodenal ulceration in smokers.

Sample Use Guides

Duodenal ulceration in smokers: DL-cysteine (200 mg 4 times daily) and DL-methionine-methyl sulphonium chloride (MMSC, 500 mg 4 times daily) were administered orally.
Route of Administration: Oral
In Vitro Use Guide
Curator's Comment: A 6-day culture of E.gracili grown autotrophically was harvested by centrifugation, and the cells were resuspended in150 ml of fresh medium. To three Erlenmeyer flasks (250 ml) each containing 50 ml of medium were added 50 ml of the suspension; 35SO42-was added to each flask (0.2mc/flask) and to two of the flasks were added 0.05 g and 0.5 g of DL-cysteine respectively.
The results indicate that although the higher concentration of DL-cysteine inhibits the uptake of 35SO42-by the cells the relative incorporation into the sulpholipid is very considerably increased; it changes from 1.53% in the absence of DL-cysteine to 27.62% in the presence of 0.5 g of DL-cysteine.
