Antimony sodium tartrate (stibophen) is a trivalent antimony compound having the same actions and uses as the potassium tartrate but more water-soluble and less irritant when injected. Antimony sodium tartrate has been used in the treatment of Schistosomiasis since 1918. It is a toxic drug and may cause unpleasant side-effects.This drug is now rarely used in the therapy of leishmaniasis, as drugs which are much better tolerated are available

Sample Use Guides

Schistosomiasis : For adults two grains of sodium antimony tartrate were dissolved in 20 c.c. of 5 per cent. glucose, and slowly injected intravenously through a 16-gauge needle--children were given doses according to their weights, taking 60 kg as adult weight.
Route of Administration: Intravenous
In Vitro Use Guide
In Ascaridia galli antimony sodium tartrate (stibophen) turned out to be a potent inhibitor of phosvitin kinase I; the inhibition constant was determined to be 10 uM.

PRIMARY Description: Colourless, transparent scales or an almost white powder; odourless. Solubility: Soluble in 1.5 parts of water; practically insoluble in ethanol (~750 g/l) TS. Category: Antischistosomal drug. Storage: Antimony sodium tartrate should be kept in a tightly closed container, protected from light. Additional information: Antimony sodium tartrate is hygroscopic. Even in the absence of light, it is gradually degraded on exposure to a humid atmosphere, the decomposition being faster at higher temperatures. Definition: Antimony sodium tartrate contains not less than 98.0% and not more than 101.0% of C4H4NaO7Sb, calculated with reference to the dried substance.
