Description

Ronidazole is an antiprotozoal agent. Ronidazole and the other nitroimidazole derivatives damage DNA following reduction of the nitro group. It is used in veterinary for prevention and treatment of various infections including histomoniasis in turkeys, trichomoniasis in pigeons, genital trichomoniasis in cattle, haemorrhagic enteritis in pigs and Tritrichomonas foetus in cats.

Ronidazole administered at 30 to 50 mg/kg orally twice daily for 2 weeks was capable of resolving diarrhea and eradicating infections of Tritrichomonas foetus in cats.

The activities of antiprotozoal compounds at concentrations ranging from 2 μg/ml to 500 μg/ml were determined via cell counts of D. fragilis trophozoites grown in dixenic culture. Ronidazole has Minimum lethal concentration (MLC), 8 to 16 μg/ml
