Ferrous sulfate FE-59 is a salt of radioactive isotope of iron. It has been used to evaluate the absorption of iron into the blood from different dietary iron sources including ferritin and ferrous sulfate. Ferrous sulfate is marketed as an OTC dietary supplement for iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia when the need for such therapy has been determined by a physician.

A radioactive isotope of iron was administered to 10 patients by mouth in order that its absorption into the blood might be studied. Each dose consisted of 10 cc. of an aqueous suspension containing 0.1 mc of Fe59SO4 with 200 mg of stable ferrous sulfate and 200 mg of magnesium aluminum hydroxide.
