Description
Curator's Comment: description was created based on several sources, including http://www.hmdb.ca/metabolites/HMDB02503 | https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/68014639 | https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12050018

Vanadium (V) is a steel-grey, corrosion-resistant metal. Because of its hardness and its ability to form alloys, vanadium (i.e., ferrovanadium) is a common component of hard steel alloys used in machines and tools. Although most foods contain low concentrations of vanadium (< 1 ng/g), food is the major source of exposure to vanadium for the general population. Vanadium is probably an essential trace element, but a vanadium-deficiency disease has not been identified in humans. At pharmacological doses, vanadium compounds display relevant biological actions such as mimicking insulin and growth factors as well as having osteogenic activity. Some vanadium compounds also show antitumoral properties.

CNS Activity

Curator's Comment: The authors found evidence of altered neurobehavioral outcomes by occupational exposure to vanadium.

Originator

Curator's Comment: Vanadium was discovered in 1801 by the Spanish scientist Andres Manuel del Rio.

In Vitro Use Guide
Vanadate (V) ions competitively inhibit calf thymus terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase with Ki = 2.5 microM. A binding of vanadium to the enzyme with no change of the amount of the Zn constituent of the protein was found at concentrations of vanadate causing inhibition. The catalytic activity of mammalian DNA polymerase alpha was also inhibited by vanadate ions at an I50 of 60 microM, while the bacterial (E. coli) DNA polymerase I was affected to the same extent only when the concentration of vanadate was raised to about 0.5 mM. In contrast to the inhibitory effects caused by vanadium on the nucleotidyl transferases, concentrations of pentavalent vanadium ions of the order of 10 microM increase 2.4-fold the hydrolytic activity of deoxyribonuclease I from bovine pancreas.
